Calories are important for energy and to help maintain weight or to gain weight.  Nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, and fat all contain calories. Protein is needed to help build and repair body tissues.  It may be difficult to have an adequate calorie and/or protein intake when your appetite is decreased. 

The following list will help you add calories and protein to your diet.

  • Milk
    • Use in place of water, soups, casseroles, and hot cereals
    • Use in sauces and gravies for vegetables and meat
    • Drink milkshakes, hot chocolate, eggnog, and instant breakfast drinks
  • Nonfat Dry Milk
    • Add 1-cup of nonfat dry milk powder to a quart of your milk and mix well.  Chill thoroughly before using.
    • Use in custards and puddings
    • Add to casseroles, meatloaf, sauces, cream soups, milkshakes, or when making muffins or bread.
  • Cheese
    • Add to casseroles, quiche, omelets, muffins, and breads
    • Add to soup (example: tomato, cream of potato, etc.)
    • Use cheese sauce on meats, vegetables, rice, potatoes, and pasta
    • Use cottage cheese in omelets
    • Cream cheese can be spread on quick bread, bagels, or fruit
  • Ice cream
    • Use in milkshakes or carbonated beverages
    • Use as a topping for fruits and desserts
    • Put a scoop between cookies or graham crackers
  • Yogurt
    • Blend with fruit for a yogurt shake
    • Use as a topping for cereal, omelets, pancakes, or fruit
    • Add herbs and spice for buttermilk salad dressing; mix to make a vegetable dip
  • Eggs
    • Mix beaten eggs or egg substitute into casseroles, mashed potatoes, or cream sauces and reheat to a boil
    • Add extra to pancake or waffle batter or French toast
    • Add chopped hard cooked eggs to sandwich fillings, salads, and soups
  • Meat, fish, and poultry
    • Add leftovers to soups, salads, pasta, and rice dishes, and vegetable combination omelets, quiche, or muffin and bread dough
  • Legumes
    • Add to pasta, soups, and casseroles
  • Peanut Butter
    • Top ice cream or blend into milkshakes
    • Spread on toast, crackers, muffins, apples, bananas, celery, or carrots
    • Mix into cookie or quick bread dough
  • Nuts
    • Add to cookies, breads, muffins, pancakes, casseroles, and meatloaf
    • Sprinkle on ice creams, yogurt, or pudding
  • Butter or margarine
    • Use plenty on cooked vegetables, noodles, rice, bread, hot cereal, and pancakes
    • Melt and mix with crumbs as topping for casseroles or vegetables
  • Sour Cream
    • Season and use as dip for vegetables
    • Add to baked or mashed potatoes
    • Stir into prepared gravies or sauces
  • Mayonnaise
    • Spread on sandwiches before filling
    • Use in meat and vegetable casseroles
  • Granola
    • Eat as cereal with milk or cream
    • Sprinkle on ice cream, yogurt, pudding, or fruit
    • Add to cookies, muffins, or bread dough
